Sharing the host Network Device with Virtual DHCP Server

Hi,
is there a way to use the host server network device as the default gateway
for the virtual DHCP server. Basically what I am interested to do is create a
virtual provate network using DHCP Server but use the host server network
device to allow this network to access the internet (KInd of a virtual
router). Any body know how to get this done?

Hi,
This is great tip but here is the problem. After I added the loop back
adapter, I was able change the network setting in vm console to use the loop
back adapter and made the changes to the dhcp setting in VM console. my VM
connects and can get an IP address (192.168.0.100) but can not get out to
internet. Do I have to brigge my shared network and loopback adapter?

Another way to do it is to use a virtual machine as a router rather than
the host. You use an internal virtual network as a private LAN and use a vm
with two NICs (one in the internal and one in the physical network) as a
router. I use a W2k server vm with RRAS as a NAT router (so that the private
LAN can see the physical network and the Internet but the physical network
does not see the private LAN) . You could use Linux if you are familiar with
that.

You do not bridge them. They are (I hope) not in the same IP subnet.
What you are doing is Internet Connection Sharing, not bridging.

Have you configured ICS on the host machine? Did you select the host's
NIC as the interface connected to the Internet and the loopback adapter as
the private interface?

I would disable DHCP on the virtual network and let the client use the
allocator (mini-DHCP server) built into ICS. The client machine needs to get
the correct gateway and DNS setting to route through the host.
