VM Additions for Linux

I'm running RedHat Enterprise 4 on a Virtual Server (MS Virtual Server
2005 R2). I have downloaded and installed the Linux Additions, and I
can see that the "vmadd" service is running on the Linux virtual box
when I boot it. However, I just can't see any real performance
improvement on the mouse cursor movement... What real benefit is there
to running the VM Additions for Linux on a VirtServer? The mouse still
"skids" across the screen and it is nearly impossible to use...

Has anyone else noticed any real improvement when using the Linux
Additions on a Virtual Server?

My Configs:

Host:
Windows 2003
MS Virtual Server 2005 R2
4 way Intel 3.2 Ghz
4 GB Ram
300 GB dual scsi mirrored drive

Guest:
RHEL 4
KDE Desktop
100% processor
2048 MB Ram
16 GB Virtual IDE HD

Please reply with any comments about your experience using the VM
Additions for Linux. Are there any configurations to make the cursor
more "useable" on a RedHat Distro in Virtual Server?

Do you still need to hit the host key to uncapture the mouse cursor? If
so - the Additions are not installed properly. Note - you need to have
the kernel sources and GCC installed in the VM in order to install the
Additions.

So, I'm fairly confident the additions are installed. It's just a
little disappointing that the mouse movement and video don't seem quite
as "crisp" as when you install the additions for WinServ2003 Virtual
Machines....

I did get the mouse to move a "little better" by droping the color
scheme down to 256 colors, changing the desktop background to a static
"solid black" image, and turning off all and any animations of cursors,
window movements, etc. But even with making those changes, the cursor
still drags or "skips" around the screen.

Maybe the s3Trio 64 video driver isn't using the VMAdditions version?
Maybe that's why turning all the colors down seems to make the mouse
move better (since there is less "video" happening)? Any ideas on what
could make this work a little better, or is this about as good as it
gets with MS VS 05 R2 running RedHat?

I did notice that on the Virtual Server Manager, it still says "Virtual
Machine Additions information not available, you should consider
installing Virtual Machine Additions"... in the RedHad Virtual Machine
Configuration page.... Should Virtual Server Manager be able to
recognize that VMAdditions are running on the Guest Box?

It definitely seems like it has something to do with video settings
causing the mouse to "jump around" and "skip" (to me at least).
Because, when I have a black background and no images on screen, the
mouse moves just fine. But as soon as I open a control panel or any
other window that has a picture as a background or many buttons with
icons (i.e. more graphics), the mouse starts to skid and skip and jerk
around the screen. But, still I have the video on the guest machine
set as low as possible (256 colors, and 800x600 resolution). Any
ideas, anyone? Or should I just use some other method of term services
for the Linux VM?
