I have a VM in virtual server 2005 that is functioning as a centralized
print server. I am getting somewhat slow responses when I try to get the
properties of a printer to show up. I did an update for virtual machine
additions to 13.552 due to the OS being windows 2003 sp1. This didn't help.
It seems that the cpu utilization is maxed out after clicking on a couple of
printer property screens(memory and network utilization are fine).

Would an upgrade to Virtual Server R2 help this situation?

Go back to a physical centralized print server?

Any other ideas?

If you open up task manager in the virtual machine - can you see which
processes are using the CPU time?

The service is always "vssrvc.exe". On one printer alone, it spikes the cpu
to an average of 30% cpu utilizitation. I am in ms word clicking on printer
properties to print a document. When multiple users are doing this, it is
dragging(very latent response). When I do it as one user, it is dragging.

Is that the process running in the virtual machine - or on the physical
computer? Also - are you running Virtual Server 2005 or Virtual Server
2005 R2?

I migrated the print server to a physical server and it was doing the same
thing(slow access to printer properties). there was a hotfix for windows
2003 sp1 being used as a print server and this sped up access to the
printers except one. this one had to be deleted and recreated in order to
get it to work right. I will make the same changes to the virtual server
this week and suspect that everything will be just fine. (Running virtual
server 2005) Thanks for your responses.
