Installed Suse Linux 10.0 in the newly freeby VS. A no problem
install, very impressive.

The Linux desktop thru the remote control window is tiny - 800 x 600.
Can it be full screen and have more pixel space?

you would on a real computer running SuSe. Go into YAST, then go to
the hardware section and under the graphics display/monitor section
select the resolution you want. I am not running SUSE right now so I
can't give you exact directions to changing the resoluion.

Actually the entire Linux experience is quite sub par. Apps take too
long to launch. The mouse cursor skips and is hard to position. Even
typing from the keyboard is slow at times and some keys repeat
eratically.

Are these issues config related, Linux is not enlightened as a guest OS
or Virtual Server is optimized for headless guests?

What I want to do is have a Linux setup so I can learn Perl and see
about porting some DB2 applications from one IBM platform to Linux. I
have Virtual PC in my MSDN subscription. Should I use VPC instead?

Hi Stephen,

To get higher screen resolutions - configure Linux to think that your
physical display is a generic LCD screen - and that your video card has
8mb of RAM. For better performance - get the VM Additions for Linux
(details here: http://www.microsoft.com/virtualserver)

And as for the question of Virtual PC vs Virtual Server - if you are
just planning to use this personally on a local computer - Virtual PC
will provide a more responsive solution.

Correct. This is the way I do it on VPC, so I imagine it will be the same on
VS:

1) Run YaST - enter the root password when prompted.

2) Click Hardware, then select Graphics Card and Monitor
SuSE will have already detected the simulated graphics card as S3 86c764/795

3) Change the monitor to LCD - 1280X1024@70Hz
You'll probably need to reboot here.

4) Change the resolution as required - my host runs at 1280*1024, and my
VPCs run at 1152*864 wherever possible.

5) DO NOT change the Colors setting - leave it at 65536 [16 bit].
