I installed Microsoft Virtual Server R2 on a physical machine that already
had Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 installed. All default options
were used during the Virtual Server installation The Virtual Server website
reports a HTTP 500 - Internal server error. There were no other obvious error
messages on the web page or Windows event log. The physical machine is
running Windows 2003 Server with SP1 and all the latest updates/patches
installed. When I perform the same install on a machine without Microsoft
Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 installed, everything works great, obviously.

You really should never install any web service type application on a
system that runs SharePoint. SharePoint replaces the normal ISAPI
functions with its own and everything goes through that.

Well, I don't think that it is impossible to get VS running on the same
box as SharePoint. Even Exchange does.
In fact I just gave it a try and it works perfect.

What does your installation look like? SharePoint on the Default Website
and VS in another one?

I was also having a similar problem, but without Sharepoint installed. For
me, I would get the HTTP 500 error if I had the site in my "Trusted" zone
within IE (so that I didn't have to continually re-authenticate when
switching machines). To resolve this, I turned off "Integrated Windows
authentication" on the website and selected "Basic authentication". For us,
this does not pose a security risk since we only allow access to the site
after first RDP'ing into the server.

Note, this only started happening after upgrading the server to R2..

Just change the User Authentication settings for Trusted Sites. Mine was set to Low and this had enabled "Automatic Logon with current username and password".

I changed this to "Automatic logon only in Intranet zone" and voila, no more 500 error.

Nathan's "changed this to 'Automatic logon only in Intranet zone'" also worked for me. This was a clean install that had not had any errors until last week when I started getting the 500 error.

What's somewhat odd is that after this change in IE it now asks me for a username and password but it matches the logged on user and works fine. Not certain why the passthru auth was failing.

Interestingly, I was having the same problem, but the server does not have Sharepoints. It's 2003 R2. I got the Virtual Server web site working by changing the "User Authentication" level in the Intranet zone to "Prompt for user name and password". It just would not work any other way (error 500, nothing useful in Event Log).
