On one out of two WinXP SP2 machines--the machine I need it to work on

Per an oblique hint from another venue about trouble installing R1, have
already tried reinstalling MSXML 4.0 with no improvement. IIS is installed
and working, and the computer is fully patched, although Active Scripting is
currently disabled for all but trusted sites. "Note: 1: 1708" would seem to
be significant.

Any suggestions?

Thanks. I've gone as far in doing this as my company's policies allow (there
are some regkeys I can't own, likely related to corporate AV software that
can't be defeated. And it didn't help. (BTW, Simple Sharing is turned off in
this system; I need to be able to granualarly see and edit NTFS permissions
for an app or two.)

The machine is on a domain, so I had our domain administrator log in on the
box and tried the install with his privileges. The result is the same: The
last install message I see before the "installation interrupted" arror is a
brief flicker of "Creating Folders"--but inspection reveals that the folders
haven't been created (whether or not I've specified a custom installation
location) when I immediately check the target folder before telling the
installer to continue.

What I *can* say is that during some times, a few further messages (relative
to my first post) are written to the installation logfile before the process
bails. From the latest run:

You will get randomly generate log names in %TEMP% for every single MSI
installation -- so undo this change after you finish troubleshooting, unless
you want every invocation of MSI to generate a log file...

David, thanks for your participation.

I think that the logging launched by the MSVS installer is as verbose as it
gets, unless changing the system's debug level would also help. (It defaults
to zero, but I had it briefly set to 7 after some Googling around, and didn't
see any more output at the critical juncture at that level.) Apparently,
setup.exe copies the server MSI to TEMP and then launches the MSI with
verbose logging turned on. When installation fails, that MSI isn't removed
from TEMP, and so it can be run directly after setup terminates. Run
directly, the MSI *doesn't* log, but adding the switch /L*v <LogfilePathname>
turns it back on as if it had been launched from setup. (Run directly that
way, it *copies itself* to TEMP under a random MSI name at launch time, but
this copy *is* removed after installation fails.) When I turn on verbose
logging manually--either with the switch or in the registry--the output is
the same as that produced by the logging launched by setup.exe.

All this investigation is fun but does not result in a working MSVS 2005 R2
installation for me. :-) And I see that at least one other user, in another
thread, is experiencing the same truncated install. So I will lurk and learn.

I had been fighting with this for hours and disabling the VHD mount function
allowed the installation to complete
