hi,

can somehelp me somehow on how to setup vlan's with ms virtual server R2.
Normally i've got an Dell 6850 with intel nics (or maybe broadcom's but then
i'll try to find some intel's and stick them into pci slot).

by now i know that i'll have to install the nic-manufactor tool (intel
pro-set?) to setup vlan's. I've done that a few weeks ago with the broadcom
cards but without any luck...

Does somebody has some experience in this case and can help me on the way?

Virtual Server does not natively support VLANs. Some people have gotten
this to work by using VLAN Trunking in the host OS - but I do not know
the details of that.

this is indeed what i'm looking for.. i know i can create "vlans" in the host
OS bt using the intel pro (or for broadcom BACS). But after this i just don't
know is this it or are there any other steps we have to make?

we tried it with broadcoms but without any luck.. so by now i would like to
try it with intel pro 1000 nics... maybe it works with those without a
problem.. but it would be nice to get some tips from someone who had done it
before...

I've had VLANs working quite nicely using Intel NICs, ProSet, and VLAN
tagging to create multiple "virtual" adapters (that is to mean on the host,
not virtualised by Virtual Server!). You can run multiple VMs all in
segregated LANs and completely isolated from each other *and* the host
server, which then had it's own isolated managment VLAN adapter.

This was achieved on a variety of hardware inc. Dell PowerEdges, Compaq
Proliants, and even a couple of Compaq desktops with embedded Intel NICs. The
only proviso I'd recommend is to use the latest version of ProSet you can,
and don't try mixing versions on different servers (this caused me some grief
once with servers running v8.x and v9.1 not talking to each other!).

I also tried to do the same with Broadcoms and got absolutely nowhere. Well
done Dell for saving themselves money fitting their servers with inferior
hardware... :-(

i hope you can help me a bit more... i use intel proset 8 (i think) with
intel pro 1000 MT server adapters (i tried updating to latest proset where
configuration has to be done in device manager? - but i'm unable to configure
vlan's using this way... not able to see any tab of proset...).

With Proset 8, I am able to open the proset, create a vlan (lets say id3)
vlan3 - at this moment does this card has to aqcuire a ipaddress on this vlan
?

i need to add this "virtual card" to my virtual server network adapters, it
shows up as intel advanced.... but when i connect a VM to this nic nothing
happens... i am making a mistake somewhere.. but really don't know what...

hope to have an answer shortly
