Configuration advice (newbie)

Source: microsoft.public.virtualserver
Sent: 02/20/2006
From: Brad Kowerchuk
Message:

I am new to VS, so please bear with me. Feel free to ask for clarification on
the enclosed.

SCENARIO: We have several offices to deploy, ranging from 10 nodes to 50
nodes each. Each environment will be require a new PDC/file server, DB server
to run Borland Interbase that needs to run on W2K server (does not support
W2K3), Exchange server, and Terminal Server.
Questions...
1) Is it reasonable for the smaller sites to try to put all of the above on
a single dressed up HP Proliant - perhaps a DL385 with 2 x dual core opteron
with lots of drives and ram? If so, how would it be configured?
-host os - W2K3 running minimal services
-guest os1- sbs2003 for pdc, file, exchange
-guest os2- w2k running interbase
-guest os2- w2k3 running ts
Is the above correct? Should I then configure 3 x RAID1 arrays (max 6
drives)? If I add up the RAM I need for each of the above, then add a bit, is
that all there is to RAM sizing?
For the 50 node site, I would try to move the TS to a separate DL360 server,
but would try to run the rest on the first DL385 server - reasonable?

2) how would the above be licensed? I know I would need SBS2003 with enough
cals and the VS standard license. How many server licenses would I need for
W2K3 - total of 2 for the guests (downgrade one to w2k)? Or a total of 3 to
also include the license of the host os? What about cals - if I buy enough of
the SBS cals, am I covered to connect to the other os's also? I've read the
whitepapers on licensing, but am still confused.

Thanks in advance for any comments on my newbie post. Feel free to comment
on any part of it, as I know I've asked alot all at once.
Regards,
Brad
