I'm having a problem with Virtual Server 2005 R2 similar to the
following post:

When typing on the keyboard on the guest O/S, the keys will randomly
repeat.

This occurs on my Intel SpeedStep 915 chipset ThinkPad R52 running
Windows XP SP 2.

I had the same problem running Virtual PC 2004 SP 1 until I applied
the hotfix discussed in this Microsoft KB article:

The part of the hotfix that resolved the repeating keyboard issue was
the modification to Options.xml as discussed in the article above:

<virtual_machines>
<enable_idle_thread type="boolean">true</enable_idle_thread>
</virtual_machines>

Without that change, the keyboard problem still exists even with the
hotfixed DLLs applied.

I was hoping that VS 2005 R2 would not need this hotfix for this
laptop, but my testing indicates that it does.

Is there anything I can do about this??

It definitely seems to be a power management issue.

For me, this link proved the most useful:

The RMClock utility lets me see the CPU frequency settings in the task
bar. For my Pentium M 750 processor, 1.86 GHz is the max. frequency.
Whenever I choose a Power Options setting in Control Panel, like
"Always On", the allowed "max. performance", Virtual Server seems to
work fine.

The reason that RMClock is so useful is that sometime choosing a
setting in Power Options does not really change the power options!! I
can't explain that. Perhaps sometimes the ThinkPad power management
settings take over. Regardless, if I saw RMClock throttle back to
798MHz, I knew I was going to be "in trouble" with Virtual Server.

So, the bottom line for my laptop seems to be "power management"
issues, as described in the blog entry above. Thankfully, the other
user's comments helped me out.

Some additional followup.

The CPU-Z utility at http://www.cpuid.com is also another good source
of determining at what speed your CPU is operating (among other
things.)

CPU-Z is a "read-only" type tool, whereas RMClock is more "agressive"
and can set CPU operating parameters, which may not be advisable for
some users.
