Admin web site broken on host computer, works elsewhere??

Well, this was working for months, and beginning yesterday I started
getting:

HTTP 500 - Internal server error
Internet Explorer

When opening on the Admin website on the Virtual Server 2005 R2 host
computer. But it works from other computers on the network.

Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this? There are no obvious entries in
the Event Logs.

Unfortunately, I tried this also. Either the trusted or Intranet zone
produces the HTTP 500 Internal Server Error message. Also, this worked for
several days (no repeated sign on requests) and started failing a few days
later. Bizarre. As a possible coincidence, the failures seemed to start
after I first connected to the Administration Web site using a different
client machine, but who knows.

As an aside, it seems like this is a setting that would only affect the
client (e.g. the browser). How does a client setting generate an internal
IIS error??

Errors involving websites are not all logged to the Event Log for obvious
reasons.

This is how I would start troubleshooting -- provide the log file entries of
the 500 errors that you see from the web browser:

I don't know how the client-side optimization of whether to auto-negotiate
credentials with IIS results in different outcome, but the log file as well
as Network Monitor traffic is where I would start first.

Also, note that the web browser defaults to "Friendly HTTP Errors" which
lump many different errors into a "500 error". This is why server-side logs
are necessary for troubleshooting. Client-side responses, while highly
visible to the user, is ultimately useless for troubleshooting.

The one case I am aware of, where local access to the admin website fails
while remote access succeeds, occurs when you Remote Desktop into the server
and then try to access the admin website locally. But, this happens all the
time, not some of the time, so we'll need more info gathered from your log
files...

I suffered with this for quite some time, and posted several times here
without success. The magic bullet for us was:

- Put the VS Admin website into Trusted Sites.
- In IIS, set the Admin website to use Basic Authentication and NOT
Integrated Authentication.

500 errors go away when entering the website, and so do the endless prompts
for credentials every time you view a VM from the console.

Clear text passwords under Basic Authentication are not an issue since we only
use the admin website directly from the server console or via Terminal
Services. If you are going to admin across a network, be sure to install an
SSL certificate so your credentials are not sent in clear text.

The last post was absolutely correct. When locally browsed, the Virtual Server site will fail with Integrated Authentication since it will try to default to NTLM (Domain) authentication. It works if you are set up as a domain member.

As a non-domain server you need to set the site up with Basic Authentication.
