VS 2005 R2 - Newbie Help - Admin Console

Greetings,
This week, I installed VS2005 R2 on a Windows 2003 Std. SP1 Dell
PowerEdge server (pretty much a vanilla installation).

Everything is working great except, I cannot run the VS administration
console from a remote machine.

From a remote machine, if I enter...
http://host.domain.com:1024/VirtualServer/VSWebApp.exe?view=1

I get ...
HTTP Error 401.2 (you are not authorized to view this page)

I've added users & groups to the Virtual Server Security settings with
full permissions with no luck.

Before I start messing around with IIS security (which is what i think
the problem is), I was hoping someone here had the answer.

I'd really like to manage my VS & VM's from a remote machine instead
of on the server.

on my problem, but so far no responses to my prevoius thread. Here it is
again, in a nutshell, hoping someone will have useful suggestions.

New problem after upgrading from VS 2005 to R2. I have tried completely
un-installing Virtual Server, rebooting and reinstalling but the problem
remains.

After logging in to the Admin website, every time I click on a machine to
view, I am prompted for credentials. I made the FQDN of the machine a Trusted
Site which solved that particular problem.

But that created ANOTHER problem. When the Admin site is in the Trusted Sites
or Intranet Sites list (I've tried both) whenever I launch the VS Admin
website it throws a 500 error with "The parameter is incorrect."

When I go back and remove the admin site from trusted (or intranet) sites, the
500 error goes away, but I am back to having to authenticate _every_time_ I
try to view any of the guests.

This happened on ALL 3 of the servers I have upgraded so far, so we have
suspended the R2 upgrades until this issue is resolved.

For the record, I have tried http://NetBIOSname:port, http://ipAddress:port,
http://localhost:port and http://fqdn.server.com:port and combinations of
Trusted and/or Intranet sites. I also went to DCOM Config -> Virtual Server
-> Properties and made sure the local administrators group has full Launch and
Activation permissions for
local and remote. (as was suggested on someone's blog)

Sorry, but I haven't seen the 500 error you're experiencing. I did
find another post with the exact problem you're having so you're not
alone. I'm wondering though if it may be related to the IE security
settings...can you test accessing it from an IE browser with default
settings? Just a thought...

Also, here appears to be the definitave reason for why people are
getting prompted to authenticate

Thanks for the link, but I've seen that one before.

Ths only combination I found to work was:
1) Turn off Integrated Authentication on the Admin website
2) Enable Basic Authentication only.
3) Put the FQDN of the server in Trusted Sites.

Since I only administer Virtual Server via browser on the physical host
machine via Terminal Services, the clear-text password issue is not really an
issue since I am not authenticating across a network. If that changes, I'll
use SSL.

Still, this indicates something is broken between a default installation of
Windows Server 2003 SP1 with Internet Explorer (all patches), and the
Integrated Authentication with IIS on the localhost.

It was extremely frustrating, since the original VS 2005 worked perfectly. It
was only after upgrading each "R1" installation to R2 that the authentication
became broken.

The other odd thing is, if I try the steps below on a Virtual Server 2005 "R1"
installation, I get the same problems as on R2 if I *don't* use those steps.

In other words, the problems are exactly reversed between R1 and R2.
