Virtual Machine Boot Failure: virtual hard disk could not opened with read-write access

Source: microsoft.public.virtualserver

Message:

Attempting to start a .vhd (standard virtual IDE) in Virtual Server
2005, the following shows in the event log and the machine won't boot:

Virtual Machine "[my machine name]" encountered an error when
attempting to use one of its virtual hard disks.

Virtual Machine The virtual hard disk "D:\Virtual
Servers\[myserver].vhd" for the master device of IDE bus 1 of "[my
machine name]" could not opened with read-write access. You need
read-write access to the virtual hard disk to boot a virtual machine.
Another virtual machine or the Virtual Disk Manager might be using this
disk right now.

I'm getting this when attempting to boot a virtual server. It was
running and I shut it down to configure the NIC, but now it won't
restart.

It's a copy of another VHD on the system but I already changed the OS
machine name, etc so it is a different identity and I was able to boot
it the first time. I also had the same problem with another VHD a
couple days ago and had to bounce the whole server.

Any ideas for what is causing this?
