When I install VSS R2 on my XP machine, the service will run right after the
install, however if I reboot my machine and try to restart the service, I get
an Error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start.

The event log registers this error...

The Virtual Server service depends on the Virtual Machine Monitor service
which failed to start because of the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it
has no enabled devices associated with it.

How can I fix this?

Yes, it is a brand new machine, fresh out of the box with a fresh intall of
XP Pro

I would make sure you're up to date with the latest SP and hotfixes, remove
the app and re-install.

reinstalled at least 6 times

Check the services snap-in to make sure all required services which are in
the "Automatic" state are "started".

Are there any other event errors?

Do you have a group policy applied to this system?

Is this system a member of a domain or workgroup?

The pc is part of a domain with no Group policies in place.
All the dependencies listed are in place with the excpetion of VMM. This
service does not exist.

The only other thing I would think of is to check the installation log for
exactly what is happening during the installation process with MSI. The logs
usually contain much more info than Event Viewer and can help troubleshooting
further.

Do you know how to enable logging?

Jason,

I fixed this by unistalling the VS 2005 R2 version and gong back to the VS
2005 with a build date of July 2004 and it is now working.

WOW! Great to hear Rick...

Sorry for not getting back to you quickly on this but check out these
logging options for MSI installs.

Just run the install (.msi file) with the command line switch(es) that you
require. I wonder now, have you tried upgrading from the original release to
R2 yet?

Logging Options
/l[i|w|e|a|r|u|c|m|o|p|v|x|+|!|*] <LogFile>
i - Status messages
w - Nonfatal warnings
e - All error messages
a - Start up of actions
r - Action-specific records
u - User requests
c - Initial UI parameters
m - Out-of-memory or fatal exit information
o - Out-of-disk-space messages
p - Terminal properties
v - Verbose output
x - Extra debugging information
+ - Append to existing log file
! - Flush each line to the log
* - Log all information, except for v and x options
/log <LogFile>
Equivalent of /l* <LogFile>

I have almost the same problem. Since I got some strange auth errors I
change the login account for the service to the domain admin. After
this the service does not restart since it does not find the vmm driver
(which is running). I change the account back to networkservice but it
still fails.

If nobody has a better idea the next step would be a reinstall but I
want to understand the problem not to do a workaround.

I have the same problem. The virtual server service is not able to start because it is unable to detect the VMM dependancy.
Under the non pnp device driver snap-in, the vmm dd has status 'unknown'.
Repeated reinstallations of virtual server 2005 R2 have not solved the problem.
