we just bought a pc (HP desktop with P4 3.2Ghz, 4x 512MB RAM, 80GBhdd + 40GB
hdd) to create a test server, primarilly to test MS CRM 3.0 application
functionality

what is the best way to install both a server and pc on this machine that
can run together (to test the CRM client while runnign the server and so)

1. Windows XP Pro with SBS 2003 as a Virtual Server?
2. SBS 2003 with Windows XP as a Virtual PC?
3. ???

If you have enough licenses, I would virtualise the whole thing. Run two
VMs - one for SBS and one for Windows XP. That way, you never need to touch
the host OS. If you ever have a problem or need to backout some
tests/changes, all you need to do is revert the virtual machine(s) in
question.

I second that. If it is possible, keep the host machine completely out
of the picture. Run the setup on virtual machines in a virtual network,
whether you use VPC or Virtual Server on the host.

That is correct - you can run two virtual machines (one XP, and one Windows
Server 2003) on the host OS.
