A couple of days ago our server went down due to a power failure and
bad UPS battery. Once the server was restarted, the Virtual Server
service started successfully, but the Virtual Machine on the box will
not start. When we try to start the virtual server we recieve the
message:

"The following error occurred:
The virtual machine could not be started. The virtual machine could not
be started. An unexpected error occurred."

No events are logged and no specific error messages are generated. All
of the drives and files are present nothing in the configuration has
changed since the power failure. Does anyone have any ideas short of
rebuilding the VS.

For a quick sanity check of the virtual disk run "Inspect" from the

menu of all your virtual disks. Inspect should not report any trouble.

Before starting from scratch, I would delete the .vmc file (and any
saved state files) and try creating a new vm using the existing .vhd .

I had the same problem. after reading the posts, i deleted the vsv file and then just made a small change to the configuration, like retyping the password for the auto start... and everything is working again.

I just wanted to express my gratitude. Your recommendations just saved my weekend. Thanks! I deleted the vmc's and vsw's and then I went into
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Virtual Server\Virtual Machines and I deleted the virtual machines and was able to recreate the Virtual Servers with their original names.

Thanks for all the responses. We had a password change on one of our servers that we didnt update within the virtual server config.

Updated that and everything worked.

You would want to set a specific application account to run your virtual
guest systems in the case they need to start up after powerfailure etc. on
host.

In other words, when running the virtual server on a designated application
account, you have the option to Auto start when host becomes available again.

I had the same problem, and found that after deleting the VMC and VSV files for the virtual machine, it wouldn't let me re-create them with the same name.

What you need to do:
Go to c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\microsoft\virtual server\virtual machines. There will be links to the VMC files. Delete the old ones, and then re-create the machines. New links will be formed.

I have had same issue which happens about every 10days on xpSP3 where I have
to replace all the files in virtual machine folder and then reset the
password for the user, and re enter the password on admin website. Then
restart the machine to get past the message. I am on version sp3 of xp pro
have found update 948515 to VS r2 sp1 which should hopefully resolve issue
permanently.
