Has anyone else seen this VMRC problem?

I'm using VS2005 (not R2, although, i have seen it occur on R2 as well) We
load several different VM's on Virtual Server throughout the day. Every
once in awhile, a VM will start up but it remains in thumbnail mode when
you try to access it via VMRC.

Even when you click on it from the VS Administration page, VMRC opens but
immediately returns to a thumbnail view, which you would see if the
permissions were incorrect. The only way to get it out of thumbnail is to
do a save state on the VM followed by a restore. You can see the VM
running (the thumbnail screen is running, so you see windows working.) You
just can't access it via VMRC.

Like I said, we only see it once in awhile. We use scripts to automate the
creation and loading of vm's, so the steps occur the same way every time.
It's not a permission problem because all the file permissions are always
the same. (A fact that we verify when the thumbnail occurs.) The scripts
handle every aspect of the creation and loading of VM's, so the prodcedure
is exactly the same every time.

Here are some details:

- running vm's are always created the same way
- It occurs at random on different vm's. Probably 1 out
of every 6-10 attempts
- all our vms are running 2003/XP Pro. thumbnails occur
on both. We have SP1 on 2003 and SP2 on XP
- all permissions are okay, and they are the same
as when the vmrc properly responds.
- when it does occur, no user can access the VM via VMRC
(not even administrator) for that VM. All other VM's
continue to work fine.
- Th VM is running, you can see the boot window inside the
thumbnail doing it's thing.
- To recover, you have to wait a few minutes then do a
save state followed by a resume to clear the problem.
(we tried just sticking an auto save and resume at the
end of our load scripts, but this didn't work because
there is the "few minutes" that you have to wait.)
- latest version of the VM additions is installed
- I verified that VS2005R2 has the same problem for us.
- A pause and resume will NOT clear the VMRC thumbnail (only
saving state does the trick, but only after a few minutes (about 10?))
- There is no entries in the EVENT logs for VS or anything else.
- Connecting from other machines via VMRC (not just local) doesn't work.
Even the users that have access besides Administrator, still fail.

It seems like there's something going on in the deep inside the Virtual
Server VMRC server that's causing the issue. As if a thread or process
isn't starting up for a VM.

If I could "detect" the thumbnail state (failed connection) via the VMRC
api, I could just reload the device via the scripts as a workaround. But
the API for vmrc that comes with Virtual Server doesn't appear to be able
to do that. And the vmrc protocol isn't documented, although, it seems to
just be VNC underneath.

As anyone else seen this problem? Any thoughts?
