Problem in expanding VirtualHarddisk

Hi,
I created an expanding virtual hard disk.
In my system in D drive , I am having 1 GB space.
This is the drive where my Virtual machine resides.
In virtual machine the C drive has very less amount. of space.
Eventhough there is place in D drive where virtual machine resides,C
drive(In virtual machine) It is not expanding.
But i am sure i mentioned it as expanding VHD

For these reasons, I am getting memory error and paging error, while i try
to execute some aplications.
I think it is bcoz of space pblm in C drive...since it is not expanding.....

plz help me .

Virtual hard disk files can, and do, quickly grow to be larger than 1
GB. That isn't nearly enough space on your host.

Open the Virtual Server Administration web site. On the left, under
Virtual Disks, click Inspect. Select your virtual disk and then click
Inspect. Post back with what appears on the resulting page.

Follow my suggestions in my previous post. In addition, from inside the
guest, tell us how big your guest's C drive is and how much free space
you have left on the guest's C drive.

I think you misunderstood the concept of expanding vhd. Even tough you
specify it as an expanding vhd, you still specify a size for the vhd. The
vhd will not expand over this size.

How much space do your virtual machine say is avalible on the virtual
harddisk?

When you look at the virtual machine configuration, what dows it say about
the hard disk? Maximum size is X GB; Currently expanded to Y GB.

How much space is left on the host D-drive?

Try to formulate your problem as a question.

As I said in my original post, 1 GB of free space on the host drive
isn't nearly enough space.

I think I know what your problem is but you still haven't given us
enough information to be sure. Inside of the guest, tell us the total
size of your C drive. You say you've only got 567 MB free on the C drive
in your guest but you haven't said what the total size of it is. You
also have not mentioned what operating system you're using in the guest.

It sounds like you've created a fairly small C drive inside of the guest
and you're now running out of room on that drive. Plus, it appears that
you don't really understand how dynamically expanding virtual drives
work.

Ignore virtual machines for a minute and think of a new physical machine
with a 16 GB hard, brand new with no partitions on it.

1. You partition this 16 GB hard drive with a 3 GB partition that
becomes your C drive.
2. You've now got a 3 GB C drive and 13 GB of unallocated space.
3. You install your operating system and some applications.
4. You've now got only 567 MB of free space left on your C drive.
5. You still have 13 GB of unallocated space on your hard drive.

Is the operating system going to automatically grow into the remaining
13 GB of unallocated disk space? No, it can't do that. You've created a
partition on the hard disk, your C drive, that is too small and even
though you still have 13 GB of space on that drive, you're out of space
on your C drive.

This is exactly the same way dynamically expanding virtual disks work.
The "dynamically expanding" part refers to the file size of the VHD on
the host, and not what you see inside of the guest. When you create a 16
GB dynamically expanding virtual drive, on the host, a small 37 KB file
gets created that to the operating system inside of the guest appears to
be a 16 GB disk drive. As you add files to the guest, that 37 KB will
grow, to a maximum size of 16 GB, however, what you see in the guest
will always be a 16 GB drive, regardless of how big or small the actual
VHD file is on your host.

So now the same example as above, but in a virtual machine.

1. You create a 16 GB dynamically expanding VHD on your host.
2. Inside the guest, you partition what appears to the guest as a 16 GB
hard drive with a 3 GB partition that becomes your C drive in the guest.
3. You install the operating system and some application in the guest.
4. The VHD on the host will have grown beyond its initial size of 37 KB
but the guest still sees a 3 GB C drive and 13 GB of unallocated space.
5. You've now got only 567 MB of free space left on your C drive.
6. You've still got 13 GB of unallocated space on your virtual hard
drive.

Is the operating system going to automatically grow into the remaining
13 GB of unallocated disk space? No, it can't do that. You've created a
partition on the hard disk, your C drive, that is too small and even
though you still have 13 GB of space on that drive, you're out of space
on your C drive.

Do you see the problem here? Do you understand how dynamically expanding
hard drives works?

To be sure that this is your problem you need to post the total size of
the C drive in your guest. And again, what operating system are you
running in the guest?

I got it now how VD expands dynamically.

as u asked , my C drive total space in guest OS is 5.85 GB and the free
space left on the drive is 443MB.

The guest OS is Windows server 2003.

What is the soln for my pblm? and how can I avoid the memory and paging error?

The only real solution here is to create a new 16 GB VHD (or larger) and
then use a tool like Ghost or Acronis True Image to transfer everything.
While performing the transfer you're going to have make sure that you
configure the imaging program to use all of the space on the new VHD.

It may even be easier to simply start over again. If you do, when you
install Windows Server 2003, during the text mode portion of setup,
choose to use the entire 16 GB disk instead of creating a 6 GB
partition.
