I have a host machine that is Windows Server 2003 sp1 running virtual server
2005. The virtual server is also Windows Server 2003 sp1. I set the vhd to
dynamically expand. Disk management on the virtual Windows server sees C: as
6GB and 10GB of unallocated space. Virtual Server 2005 has expanded the disk
past the Maximum Size of 16GB to 54.2GB. Should it have only expanded to the
Maximum size of 16GB?

No, I have not run any virus scans or defrags on the host. I do have 3 other
guests running on this host and they seem to be fine.

a few questions on how to fix it:
1 - If I convert the 54.2GB vhd to fixed, will it resize to the max size of
16gb?
2 - Do I need to compact the 54.2 GB vhd before converting it to fixed?

Is this guest under a particularly heavy stress?

For right now, I suggest running a defrag inside of the guest, then if you
have VPC SP1, mount the Precompactor ISO, and run that, and then compact the
VHD. There's no reason it should be that big

fyi - I converted the 54.2GB dynamic disk to a fixed disk and it compacted
to 16GB. The guest seems to run fine.

Is there a valid reason why actual utilization would exceed the 16GB for which
the disk was configured? All of the sudden I have a major concern.

One of our standard configs is 3 virtual machines, each with a 24GB disk, on
an 80GB partition (24 * 3 = 72GB). Given that an 80GB disk is "really" only
about 75GB because vendors like to fudge the numbers and use 1000 MB (instead
of 1024) as a gig when advertising disk space, that gives us about 3 GB of
breathing room.

If it's true that the virtual HD file can exceed the file size configured,
we're in for a potential disaster when the VMs begin filling up their virtual
disks.

Hi,

I personally do not know under which circumstances this happens.

If you have 3 VHDs which are supposed to use the whole drive, why not go
with fixed disks? You may notice a slight performance boost (generally
noticeable during OS installations, but it sounds like that already
happened), and if there's no need for a dynamically expanding disk, it may
be the better route
