0. Make sure VM Additions is installed in guest
1. Run defrag in guest (needs VM Additions)
2. Run VHDCompactor in guest (needs VM Additions)
3. Shutdown guest (needs VM Additions), and sometimes shutdown hangs, so you
need to forcribly turn-off the VM
4. Run VHD Compact command from host
5. Restart the guest OS

Virtual Server Admin API can actually be scripted to do all these things,
but it isn't too straight forward and you do not have all the pieces up
front (I had to do several tweaks to have the entire sequence automated).

It would be VERY nice if VM Additions handled all of this in the future and
it becomes a simple VS Admin API "task" call. Especially the
InstallAdditions() function.

a problem to where somehow the size of the VHD is growing past it's limit.
The last time it got to 33gig when the max is 16gig.

to work. Now I need to figure out why I can't get the compact call to run.
If I manually put the vm in saved or turn off state, I can manually run
compact. However, I can't get it to run from the following code.

Any ideas? The code below is assumming that the vm is in a saved or turned
off state. I'm just trying to kick off compact programmatically.

If you use "On Error Resume Next", then I suggest you get into a good habit
by checking the Err object and assuring that nothing unexpected happened

According to documentation, there is no such thing as
IVMVirtualMachine.HardDisk property, so I'd expect objHD.Compact to simply
fail because it is indeed null/undefined.

IVMHardDisk.Compact() returns a IVMTask object representing progress on
compaction. You should wait on it and display progress.

The Virtual Server documentation is pretty good with the details, and it is
pretty easy to figure out what is going on (though it takes a little effort
to wrap one's mind around the API). If you are expecting complete sample
code and working scripts... you should expect that in some step-by-step book
or "Script Center". It is well known that for a given product, people
require vastly different sorts of information for programmability -- it is
impossible to have a one-size-fit-all resource.

Here is how I would revise your code to be consistent with what is
documented. My syntax with VBScript may be wrong; I use JScript most of the
time. But, you should get the idea.

dim objVS, objVM, objVHDs, objVHD, objTask
Set objVS = CreateObject("VirtualServer.Application")
Set objVM = objVS.FindVirtualMachine("w2k3Panda")
Set objVHDs = objVM.HardDiskConnections

For Each objVHD in objVHDs

Hello David,

Thank you for the response. Code doesn't work either. Get error that
object doesn't support objVM.HardDiskConnection. Do you have a sample piece
of jscript of a save, compact, wait and start. (I can figure it out just as
good as vbscript.)

As for the code samples, I'll agree to disagree on the documentation in the
most PC way I know. :)

What I'm saying it would be nice if you clicked on IVMHardDisk Method, it
gives you some type of short script, code snippet. I'm not saying something
that covers everything just something to inititiate the thought process of
how to use it. Every method in there should have something in each language
supported. Again not something that shows everybody how to do everything but
just like in MSDN if you look up a function, you at least get something on
them. (It used to be like the VS stuff but it's gotten better. :)

It's just a suggestion from a customer on how in my opinion to make things a
little better in working with VS. Remember, VS programming is something
that gets thrown upon me when there is a task that needs to be done, I'm sure
like most consultants, I don't want to have to have to take the "little
effort to wrap my mind around apis" on every product I sell to customers. I
lose money when I have to which makes me unhappy, which makes me dissatisfied
with products, which sometimes leads me to looking for better alternatives to
recommend to customers.

The time I'm spending on this script is a result of some type of problem
with VS as I mentioned to where the size of the vhd is growing past the max
limit for whatever reason. With not much effective advice from the forum,
we've found a work around and are trying to figure out a way to automate this
for a customer so we don't have to charge them for stopping by, manually
shutting down the VM, compacting the file every week which makes them very
dissat Microsoft customer. :)

Again, thanks for helping me David, I'll recant a little and state the
documentation for the product at this stage isn't bad but there's definitely
room for improvement as far as the programming documentation goes.
