Has anybody installed VMWare ESX or ESXi?

OK I know this is mainly a MS suport site and dealing with MS products but
I'm sure there are IT professionals who have installed VMWare products on
the servers. My question is a very simple one regarding getting started.
When you download the ESXi y (which is free by the way) from VMWare site it
is downloaded in a single .iso file. I'm confused as to how I extract or
install this image to a DVD or CD in order to boot from it. I've alreay
tried just extracting the file from the .iso and there seems to be other
zipped and cat files within. I know this is some sort of image file so I'm
thinking the image needs to somehow be installed onto the DVD/CD in order
for me to boot with it so that I can install ESXi. Has anybody worked with
this before and what is the process. Much appreciated.
