MOSS 2007 VHD Networking

I downloaded and installed Server 2007 R2 and the MOSS 2007 VHD to my laptop.
The MOSS VHD is running fine; however, I'm new to the virtual server
environment and cannot figure out how to set up networking between my laptop
and the virtual environment to mimic an actual SharePoint environment where
the connects to the SharePoint environment (virtual server) from their
desktop (my laptop). I did an ipconfig on the virtual server but cannot ping
that address from my laptop. I also found IP addresses in SharePoint Central
Admin that I cannot ping, either. Please help. Thanks...

It is a bit hard to say, since you did not give an info about how you
configured the networking.

Is the laptop connected to a physical network? If it is, the vm should
behave just like another machine on the physical network. Do the host and
guest have IP addresses in the same IP subnet? Have you tried turning off
the firewall in the vm?

direction. And, are you saying the laptop has to be alive on a network
(wired or wireless) for the laptop to talk to the virtual machine?

What IP are you tring to ping?

Yes, an unplugged or disconnected NIC is not active. Unless you've
set up a virtual network on your laptop, it would need to be plugged
in.

As Bill mentioned, install the loopback adapter on the host, select
that for your NIC in the VM's settings and manually assign IPs in the
same subnet for your laptop and VM.
