How do VMs 'talk' to other VMs on the same virtual server, if they're
connected via the external network?

For example, I have 2 VMs on the same virtual server that need to
communicate. Both are connected to the same VS NIC on the external network.

If VM1 sends packets to VM2, does it go out the VS NIC to the network
switch, and then back to the VS, in the NIC and to VM2?

When you set up an external virtual network, Virtual Machine Network
Services works with the NIC driver to make each virtual NIC work just like a
physical NIC on the same Ethernet segment. Each vm has its own MAC address
and its own IP address. The networking software does not know or care
whether the machine is physical or virtual.

If one machine needs to communicate with another on the same segment, it
uses ARP to get its MAC address. If both MAC addresses are on the virtual
network the traffic probably doesn't go to the switch, but you would never
notice the difference if it did.

You could always use a network sniffer on the physical network if you
really want to know!
