Hi all

Total newbie to all this stuff, so please excuse....

I am trying to get some issues clear to help to formulate a backup strategy
going forward.
By far our most critical box is our exchange server in terms of staying
connected and being seen to communicate etc.
From a DR stand point, this is the box that people are likely to want to see
back first.
If our premises got torched for instance, we could have the exchange server
backed up off site such that it could be virtualised and configured to run
externally as an interim measure.
The question: is this possible when the exchange server is not a domain
controller on our current network? (exchange and DC not recommended by MS).
I would expect that the box, virtual or otherwise, would have to interact
with AD to function.

I support *small* business environments. So we often look at some, ahem,
alternative ways of securing data. So this is a bit off the wall, but quite
effective:

Windows Home Server, and an add-in called BBDB (back up backup database).

WHS is capable of backing up your servers daily, automatically, incredibly
efficiently both in terms of time window and disk cost. It employs block
based backup, and data de-duplication. It automatically manages the number
of backups kept. BBDB allow you to copy the backup database from the WHS to
external disk (usb or eSATA) for off-site.

In the event of the total loss of your IT environment, it can be
reconstructed by getting your hands on another WHS box, restoring the backup
database, and from this you can rebuild your environment by booting the
various boxes from the WHS recovery disk, and restoring them. The restore
can be done to real hardware, or virtual machines. There will be the
customary hardware differences to deal with, (unless the backed up servers
were virtual to start with), but it's all doable.

A WHS box can back up 10 computers - on top of your 4 servers you could also
back up 6 of the most critical workstations.

While none of this is officially supported, it works incredibly well and the
whole setup can be had for less than $1,000, including some external drives
for off-site copies.
