Confusion about Linked virtual disks

Among the hard disk config options (expanding virtual, fixed virtual, etc) is
an option to create a "linked" hard disk. Dropdown options include the hard
drives that are currently mounted on the system.

However, when I create one of these linked disks and try to apply it to a VM,
I get the error that linked disks cannot be applied.

1) If a linked physical disk cannot be applied to a VM, what is their use?

2) Is there a way to successfully mount a physical disk in a VM?

I have a disk with a custom software installation, and I'd like to use our
partition cloning software to clone the physical disk partition onto a virtual
disk partition within the VM.

for an explanation.

Yes, Linked VHDs is a little different. This is actually all written in VS
documentation, but prior experience has shown that even when documented, it
can take some time to understand fully.

Here is the relevant text:

"Before you create a linked virtual hard disk, use Disk Manager in the host
operating system to remove the disk from the host operating system to ensure
the disk is not in use. Linked disks are intended only for converting
physical disks to virtual hard disks. Data corruption may occur if you
attempt to convert a physical disk that is available in the host operating
system."
