Problem with network shares on host server

Hi,

I just installed Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 on Windows 2003 Server (with all
updates installed).

Windows 2003 Server is setup as a basic local server with no active
directory or DNS installed.

Even with no virtual machines running (all turned off), I am still having
the following problem:
It takes the workstations forever to open and view network shares in
explorer ("My Computer") that are on the host Windows 2003 Server. Some are
waiting approx 5 minutes for some timeout to occur. Stepping into folders
repeats this problem.

This is also interfering with open shares being severed unexpectedly.

Any help or suggestions is appreciated.

DNS? It's almost certainly a standard network issue, and the most common
failure point is an unreachable primary DNS server.

All workstations are on the same subnet and it was working fine before I
installed Virtual Server.

Perhaps it has something to do with the network interface Virtual Server
installs?

Is it preferable to have a separate physical network card for Virtual Server
to use?

Usually you can use the same NIC for both the host and the virtual
machines. Installing Virtual Server modifies the NIC driver so that it goes
into promiscuous mode to handle traffic addressed to the virtual NICs as
well as the physical NIC. Occasionally this can cause problems for the host
networking if the driver and Virtual Machine Network Services do not work
well together.

You can check to see if there is an updated driver for you NIC which
could solve the problem. You can install an additional NIC in the host and
dedicate it to the virtual network (by clearing all of the check boxes on
the host side except VMNS). On the NIC dedicated to the host you would clear
the VMNS checkbox so that it was not used by the vms.

NIC had the most current driver. I even tried rolling back to the previous
driver and still same problem.

Removing the Virtual Machine Network Services from the NIC solved the
problem.

In the next few days I will install another NIC dedicated to Virtual Server.
Hopefully it will get around this problem.
