VS 2005 R2 SP1 - Win2003 guest does not start with service

Source: microsoft.public.virtualserver
Sent: 01/24/2008
From: Bo Berglund <(email address - cut out)>
Message:

I have my VS 2005 handling one single VM, this is a Win2003 server
that is managing things like VPN access via RRAS.
I have set the guest to be shut down when VS stops and to start with a
60 sec delay when VS starts.

This has worked before but a few days ago when I had applied new
Windows Update stuff on the host and the update restarted the host, my
VS guest did not start!
I discovered this the hard way when i tried to connect via VPN from a
remote location.

My host is a DELL with XP-Pro SP2 and (obviously) all the latest
updates applied. It has 600 Gb disk and 4 Gb RAM.

What can cause the guest to not start up even though it is set to
autostart? And how can I guarantee that it is actually running with
the host? Apparently setting the properties is not enough.
