Am I reading this right? Red Hat Linux 9.0??? from 2003??????
They dropped that whole thing and went down the Fedora path eons ago.
Is there a modern Fedora supported ?????

If not, what about CentOS, what flavor of that is supported.

Or is Microsoft still in denial and truly wants to force people to buy
an Linux distro?

From my experience CentOS 4.5 has issues on Virtual Server 2005 R2. I have
installed Fedora 4 many times in virtual and have used the addtions. I also
have a Ubuntu virtual appliance in use as well. Not with additions however.

CentOS 4.x and 5.x work flowlessly for me. I must say, all of these
guests don't have any GUI installed; no X, no Gnome, no KDE.

In order to get them run:

- don't use the SMP kernel on CentOS 4.x, use the "normal" one;
- don't use virtual SCSI drives; only IDE;
- don't use LVM; only plain ext3 and swap partitions;
- install additions.

Prior to installing additions accomplish the following:

"yum update kernel"

Reboot after that and check twice that you're booting into the
"normal", not SMP kernel.

Next step is needed on CentOS 4.x only: "yum remove kernel-smp".
Reboot after that and let the VM boot into the newest "normal" kernel.

"yum update" - reboot after that

"yum install kernel-devel gcc". These are needed in order to build the
kernel module.

Now install Additions:

rpm -ivh vmadd-kernel-module-RHEL-2.0-1.i386.rpm
rpm -ivh vmadd-heartbeat-2.0-1.i386.rpm
rpm -ivh vmadd-shutdown-2.0-1.i386.rpm
rpm -ivh vmadd-timesync-2.0-1.i386.rpm

That's all. Now, you can accomplish your DB-tests once more. Please
inform us on the results.
