ISCSI for clients?

Message:

From what I've seen, virtual machine access to virtual disks is about half
the speed of non-virtual access. This is presumably due to the overhead of
transition through a host OS, and is likely the reason VMware ESX currently
has a performance advantage.

I got to thinking, though: what if we used iSCSI (initiator) on the guest
OSes? That would allow the guests to talk directly to an iSCSI server
(target) without transitioning through the host, except for the network
interface access. And that interface could be dedicated to virtual
service.

Am I dreaming? Would it make any difference? Has anyone actually tried it?
