Ubuntu Gutsy cannot read CDROM during install???? crazy

We normally deploy our solution in VMWare Server. Well, we now have a
customer that has standardized on Microsoft Virtual Server. I never
believed getting things to work in this environment would be so
difficult.

Our server runs on Ubuntu.

We created an image VPC 2007, but it would not run under 2005R2SP1
(boots, but no network)

We TRY to create an image in 2005R2SP1, but the Ubuntu install process
hangs right after setting up the keyboard, then comes back a few
minutes later saying it cannot mount the CDROM.
- strange, since obviously the CDROM is being accessed to even get
this far in the install
- I have tried ISOs and physical CDs
- after hours of futzing, I got excited because someone mentioned in
the forum I should use IDE drives
- tried that, still get the same result, hangs for an agonizing 3-5
minutes then says it cannot mount the CDROM

The there is the problem of how to get additions installed.

So far, this is proving to be a pain, and in general I am a Microsoft
fan, ugg.

We are running Ubuntu server (so not mouse or graphics issues).

We are using Virtual Server R2 SP1 (I said it works fine in VPC, that
is not the problem).

I have seen some references to a cdrom driver change in gutsy causing
issues, so am now trying to install feisty, then upgrade to gutsy.

The reason behind the MSI is for the license agreement. With a zip
file you're not prompted with it and need to accept it before you can
unzip.

Bo, there is no any reason but the EULA. Don't think too much about
it.

Next time, install 7zip on your workstation, and prior to installing
any MSI package, just decompress it, as if it were a zip file. That's
what I've done with the new Linux-VM-Additions. I decompressed the iso
file after it, and if I need to install the Additions in a guest, I
just copy the needed packages to the VM over the network using SCP...

@all: The thread is gone offtopic somehow, isn't it?

I couldn't install Gutsy in a VM, too. Because of the new CD-ROM
driver...

Hi All,

I am not sure what level of Microsoft Platform competence we have hear, but there are many reasons to distribute packages in MSI format. For starters, MSI's allow for automatic distribution via Intellimirror (a combo of Org Units and Group Policy objects). In this manner I can assign the package to a fleet of servers in a cluster, for example, with a few clicks.

Also, via MSIs, I can use programs like SMS or Unicenter to get a software inventory of whats installed and what versions. Also, MSIs
can be repackaged as PDFs [SMS Package Definition Files] (and vice versa) for SMS to install and remove automatically.

Lastly, it also makes manipulating the virtual server via the scripting interface easier, as I can now detect that the additions are in fact, installed on the server, so they can be deployed automatically to VMs via script (includes mounting and such).
WSH is a wonderful thing... :)

Lastly, if there are reasons to patch or alter the MSI, it can be deployed as-is with an additional MST (MSI Transform) with said alterations instead of removing and resintalling the MSI.

With intellimirror, I can't see why everyone doesn't demand everything be installed as an MSI.
