Can"t access DVD Drive

Source: microsoft.public.virtualserver
Sent: 04/16/2007
From: Bob
Message:

I'm using "Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 – Beta 2" and I can not get any of my
virtual machines to read any disk in the DVD-ROM drive. When I attach a
"Physical CD/DVD drive" using my "Drive F" or "Drive G", using either the
primary or secondary channels, the OS running in the virtual machine will
display a window that states:

"Windows cannot access this disc".
"The disk might be corrupt".

The OS running in the virtual machine is Vista and another is Server 2003.

If I share the DVD drive at the host, the virtual machines can find it and
read the DVD's contents.

My two virtual machines were created with ISO images, so I didn't need the
physical drive to work. But now I'm trying to install another OS and all I
have is a physical media that the new virtual machine can not recognize.

I've two identical Dell XPS-410 machines both of which are running "Virtual
Server 2005 R2 SP1 – Beta 2" on top of Windows Server 2003 SP2 R2 Enterprise
Edition hosts.

The only difference between the two is one is has "Sony" brand DVD drives
and the other has some other brand. The “Sony” machine is failing.

What could be causing this error?
