Writing a script to perform a "complete" backup

Hello

I'm trying to write a script to perform a complete backup of my VMs.
I want it to be like this:

1 - Save VM state
2 - Copy all the files to another place
3 - Check if the backup is OK (if the VM can startup normally in another
Virtual Server host)
4 - Restore VM state

Saving, copying and restoring are OK, but I need help when performing step
3. How can I "check" if a VM is OK by scripts?

I know that it's possible to add/remove and start/stop a VM (the server
where backups will be placed has Virtual Server installed), but I don't have
and idea of how to see by scripts that the VM started-up successfully.

Could you help me?
