I don't use VMWARE as scuh a tool that support VirtualPC/VirtualServer
(destination) format is prefered. I'll take a closer look at the virtual
environment option.

Message:Which tool has created this image? There are converter tools around which
can migrate from one image format to another or migrate a physical machine
to a virtual. Search Google for P2V (Physical to Virtual) or take a look at

Another possibility which is used quite frequently for imaging softwares
like Ghost or Acronis is simply to set up a virtual environment for the sole
purpose of restoring an image directly to a vhd: create to empty vhd, attach
them to the virtual environment as second and third hard drives, copy the
image file to the second hard drive and restore it to the third one. Detach
this last vhd and used it as the booting device of a new virtual
environment.
Before making the restoration, it's a good idea to partition the target VHD
to make sure that the master boot record is correctly writen or take the
precaution of imaging the whole physical hard drive used as the source and
not just one of its partition (even if there is only a single partition on
it); otherwise the MBR might be uncorrectly writen.

A "Damn Small Linux" bootable CD .iso is all that you need to do that.
