We are evaluating virtual server 2005 for production with our dedicated
virtual server environment (IE. Customer pays X dollars a month for a
dedicated virtual server).

We stood up 6 hosting servers on brand new 1750s running Server 2003 with 4
Gigs of ram each running virtual server 2005. Each virtual hosting server
had 15 virtual servers created and monitored externally.

Every virtual server on each of the host machines was loosing connectivity
amost every hour. Below is the up/down times for one.

Some of my co-workers interpret this MSDN page as meaning that the process
of saving the state actually shuts down the virtual server temporarily while
it's saving -

A high-CPU or high-IO host process can "starve" the VMs for enough processing to respond
reliably. My guess is that you have some task running about 5 min before the hour
until about 2-4 mins after the hour that is starving your guest VMs for time.

To answer your question Saving a VM does not pause or stop Virtual Server, but
it does start an IO intensive task on the host. My experience is that Saving a VM
alone is not intensive enough to cause this behavior.

Does a 1750 have more than one CPU? Virtual Server seems to run better on at least a
real (non-HT) 2-way system where the host has access to more than one CPU for IO.

Thanks for your reply Jack.

We don't have anything else running on these host machines, and all
non-essential services have been shutdown (things such as help and support,
print spooler, wifi config etc..).
