Back-up running virtual servers

Hi,

I have a question about back-ups of virtuals servers.

We have four virtuals servers running that we use in the netherlands
and in china. We want to perform a daily back-up on this servers. But
because of the time difference it is not possible to shut down the
virtual servers and copy the files.

Has someone got a solution for this, is the only way to use back-up
software like you use on a normal machine??

Cluster the virtual servers (so you have 8 virtual servers) so that you
can take one server down at a time to backup its VHD file. This
improves the availability of your servers, too, since right now any
server goes down, you lose access. Whereas if you cluster, you can lose
one server and the other in the cluster is still active and ready.

Of course, you can also use traditional backup software within the
Guest OS.

I think there are also other approaches involving shadow copy which
take advantage of the VHD nature of virtual machines.

But in general, I think clustering is better because if you value
uptime for these servers, you should make them redundant in a cluster.
That way, you improve uptime for general access as well as for backing
up.

Agreed.

I wasn't meaning to imply that to backup running virtual servers use
clustering.

I was trying to say that if you value uptime you should cluster, and
ability to take a server down for backup comes as a fringe benefit.

Are you saying that the host system running Virtual Server 2005 can use
Volume Shadow Copy to make copies of the .VHD/.VMC while the guest is in
running and in operation?

VSS is supposed not to work in VS2005 R2 EE . Only SP1 will support VSS
to backup running VM . As far as I know
