I want to put Exchange 2003 and DC for AD 2003 for 100 users on the
same machine, but separated by virtual machines. So which configuration
is best

1. Windows Server 2003 as a host with a VM for Exchange and a VM for
AD/DC

or

2. Windows Server 2003 with Exchange with a VM for AD/DC

or

3. Windows Server 2003 with AD/DC with a VM for Exchange

Anybody doing this?

I'm doing config 1.

Win2003 server running Multiple Virtual servers. One backup DC, one
Exchange, two SQL 2000. Actually we've moved the Exchange to a
different VS Host at this time.

I like the configuration of a plain configured host running virtual
server with multiple VS Clients running on it. That way you can
copy/move/backup the VS clients from one server to another. Makes the
clients very portable for backup and disaster recovery options.

We've been running this config for about the last 20 months or so and
about 60 users.
I understand Exchange isn't officially supported on a VS though.

Thanks for the reply. I have heard that Exchange is supported on VS,
but it is recent news. Apparently they have been doing all their
testing in Virtual Environments. My only concern with Config 1 is that
Exchange gets enough CPU in the VM. How many mailboxes are you hosting?

We're hosting 79 mailboxes.
During an average mid morning look at the CPU utilization hovers mostly
between 4% to 16% on the host. On the Exchange Virtual, it hovers
around 4% to 12% with some high periods sprinkled in at maybe 50s to
an occasional 90% spike.

The big factor in our environment is Virtual disk space. We have
strict mailbox sizes 12 meg warning, 15 meg prohibit send, 30 meg
full prohibit. Also the OS and information store are on separate
"disks" for the exchange.

I would recomend config one as well. I run 24 virtual machines on a
single host server. Everything I have read about performance is to let
the host server just be a host. I run Exchange, AD, several SQL
servers, web servers etc all on one host. Don't have any problems with
perfomance, Virtual Server 2005 R2 seems to do a real good job of
manageing the load. We have 80 users in Exchange and a 40 Gig
Information store.

I have some pretty beefy hardware, it's a HP DL585, quad 2.4 Ghz x64
Opterons with 32 Gigs of RAM. RAM will be something you will want
plenty of.

I would advise against running MS Exchange in a virtual environment,
especially if you have other guest running on the host. Mainly the biggest
problem is Disk IO. After speaking with MS Support when we were having
issues getting stores to mount(Note the server was running ok, but after 50
or so mailboxes and about 10 storage groups it started to choke), they
stated that yeas it is supported, but we DO NOT RECOMMEND IT.
Save yourself the aggrevation. Especially if you have large mailboxes. You
will also see a bunch of msvmscsi timeouts in the event log. Our host server
had high speed 15k drives in it as well. I dont beelive exchange in a
virtual environment is ready for production yet.
