Running a DELL Poweredge 1950 and the network on the host disconnects when I
turn on a guest machine. Both nics are setup on the guest:

Virtual network adapter 1 Connected to â€œExternal Network (Broadcom BCM5708C
NetXtreme II GigE (NDIS VBD Client) #2)â€
Current Ethernet (MAC) address: 00-03-FF-C1-FE-A8
Virtual network adapter 2 Connected to â€œExternal Network (Broadcom BCM5708C
NetXtreme II GigE (NDIS VBD Client))â€
Current Ethernet (MAC) address: 00-03-FF-DE-FE-A8

This is a brand new server and I paid good cash for it!! This is killing my
project release date!!!!!!!!!! Is there any resolution for this issue yet?
I tried applying the MS Scaleable Networking Pack and it didn't help (host os
still loses connectivity)

HELP!!!

Thanks for the reply. I thought it was just Murphy's Law again!!! haha! It
looks as though we're the testers for this new patch and it isn't working! I
am going to be on the phone with DELL and MS sometime tomorrow and will
report back here when I find out more info. The guy I spoke to today said
that they had a guy working on it but my tech would be on vacation tomorrow.
Please feel free to loop me in on the this issue if that might help.

It might be a bit disheartening to know that this issue is occuring in
Virtual Server R2 SP1 as well (so they havn't even patched it there yet).

You might also mention that I received an error when applying the patch
"Unable to migrate existing packages", or some error to that effect, but the
patch still shows up in add/remove programs. This probably just means that a
reboot was required to commit the patch. It was a pretty nasty looking error
though.

It did seem to resolve the issue but then I realized that the Guest OS was
blocking the host network after it booted fully. I did "ping 192.168.100.1
-t", which gave me feedback on when the issue occured and this is what I
found: Before applying the patch, the host would lose connectivity
immediately after turning on the Guest. After applying the patch, the Host
OS would only lose connectivity after the guest was finished booting.

I also noticed that if I set the guest OS to one specific NIC that the ping
would continue to work for the internal network but still failed externally.
This probably just confirms that each NIC is mutually exclusive between guest
and host.

I have also tried creating the machine again and using the existing NIC. As
another note, I have a new DELL Power Edge 850 server with two Broadcom
NetExtreme Gigabit NICs but they're not NetExtreme 2 and that machine's
Virtual Server has no issues.

I'll give a call to Broadcom as well...

For anyone else experiencing this issue that stumbles along and reads this

I can confirm that disabling IPMI on the Broadcom NetXtreme II NICs is a
valid workaround to this problem.

Here is one procedure:

The procedure provided to me by Broadcom is done from within windows, can be
done via RDP, and doesn't require a restart, allthough there is a very short
network disconnect. I don't yet have permission from Broadcom to distribute
the files, but I've requested they make them publicly available.

SYMPTOMS
When you try to access resources on your Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 host computer from a guest virtual machine, the performance is very slow. When you try to copy a large file, the file copy may take minutes when you expect it to take seconds. Or, the large file transfer may not be completed. You may also experience that the guest virtual machine or other guest virtual machines that are attached to the same virtual network may disconnect from the virtual network.

This problem may also cause actual non-virtual network connections to the host machine to be disconnected.

Method 1
Enable local area network (LAN) routing on the host computer, and then move the virtual network to the Microsoft Loopback Adapter.

Method 2
Disable TCP task offloading in the registry of the host computer. To do this, follow these steps.

Step 3) Determine the MAC address for the NICs you want to "fix". You

can get this from Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools ->

System Information : Components : Network : Adapter. There are lots of

adapters listed here so be careful to choose the right ones.

Step 4) Extract and execute "run.bat" and enter the MAC address

collected in step 3

I have the DELL Poweredge 2900 (same NIC as the 1900) I had the problem and
it is fixed with this solution
BUT if you team the 2 NICs together (BASP) I can not get the VM's to talk to
the rest of the network
I am using a 3rd NIC for admin access to the server
I want to use teaming since I plan to have 4 vm on this box, a domain
server, a SAV server, a TS, and a SQL, the reason for teaming is so that the
VM can share the extra bw but when they need to talk to each other (SQL and
TS will be chatting all the time) it will not have to out the switch and and
come back to talk. Is there a better way? I will also have computers in the
LAN talking to the SQL VM (the TS can not be on the SQL server (besides for
security reasons))

there is a well known issue with the BroadCom Adapter, if you create a TEAM
Adapter, you can not use it in Virtual Server as a new virtual network
because the guys from BroadCome have done something with the "Virtual"
Adapter that is created in the control panel.

After working with many network products, all the INTEL seem to work, and

Ugh - just spent nearly a day trying to figure out what was wrong with my new (Dell) server with Broadcom NICs and MS Virtual Server.

Yup the workaround offered by Broadcom does seem to work as previously posted (thank you!). Also check out their faq (scroll down to item #100) - http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/faq_drivers.php

The NIC teaming issue looks to still be a problem.....

I have 6 Dell Poweredge 6850 Quad core servers that were doing the exact same
thing. Got in touch with Dell and they said its a known problem with Virtual
Server 2005 and Broadcom network cards that are shipped with the Dells. They
had me go out and download the BroadCom NetExtreme II Suite from their
website and that seems to have sloved the issue. You have to install the
whole suite, just the updated drivers will not correct. This has solved
everyone elses problem that they had the exact same issue so I am sure this
is all you need to do.

Using 1950, this whole issue caused us so much grief that we installed a new
dual-interface PCI-X NIC card. There are also some other issues with the
Broadcom cards.

The whole point of the card is that it is "intelligent" and requires less
CPU cycles during normal operation, but in certain cases where the TCP/IP
stack used outside normal operations (read Virtual Server) this causes drops.

We now use the two Intel PCI-X NICs for VS operation and the onboard
Broadcoms for normal LAN access.

I thought I had solved the issue with the BroadCom NetExtreme suite that was
installed for all the broadcom NICs, but after about 2 weeks we still
experienced the same problem, although not nearly as bad. I just went to
all my Dell virtual servers and installed extra Intel network cards. I
placed all the virtual machines on the Intel cards and I use only one of the
Broadcom cards for just the server (no vms at all) and disbled the second
broadcom card. So far, so good. I think the only 100% way to correct issue
is to take the broadcom network cards out of the equation completely and not
use them at all with Virtual Server.
