we only have one Domain Controler, we do backups, but I am not sure how to
test if it is valid.
I try to restore the backup to a PC, but then the PC stop working. If there
a way to test it by a virtualserver? like restore the PDC to a virtualserver
and turn off the real PDC and use the virtualserver as temp PDC?

Restoring an image of a computer to a different kind of machine can result
in odd occurences (and is generally not supported)

Hi,

which software are you backing up with? What sort of hardware is your
Domain controller and what do you have available to do a restore?.

You can install Virtual Server on a PC and build a virtual windows server
that you may do a restore to. To do this you need to ensure the server you
restore to isn't connected to the same network as the live domain
controller. When you do the restore you could be luck in that the server
won't crash due to the hardware diffences, before you attemt this you should
search the internet for P2V methods for a large number of ways to achieve
your goal and some common potential issues around this.

On another note, I suggest that running another domain controller is
probably a good idea. Even if you only build a reliable PC running Windows
as a domain contoller you will have instant resilliance in the event of a
failure on the current DC. You will also have more flexibilty for testing
restores as you can change the roles of DC from one to another before taking
one offline and performing offline restores and testing.
