I have an existing server running Win2K3 Standard and Exchange 2003 Standard
to support OWA. We need another server to run Exchange 2003 to host Lotus
Domino connectors. My question is can we install Virtual Server 2005 onto
the existing Exchange server leaving the first copy of Exchange on the host
OS, then run a second copy of Exchange on the VM's guest OS. Is this a
supported configuration by Microsoft?

Well Bruce,

There is no knowledgebase articale syaing it is not supported, so probably
it is :)
Just keep in mind that resources are plentifull, CPU/RAM/Disk and your
virtual Windows/Exchange needs licensing just like your physical.

You proably might also want to alter you disk layout a bit so your VM does
not interfere with your existing optimized disk layout.

Thanks for the response Niels. After I posted this I found a Virtual Server
performance article, KB 903748, that recommends not doing what I proposed.
Another person posted on this newsgroup that he had run into problems
layering Virtual server on top. I was working with a Microsoft Exchange SE
and he stated it probably would be supported. But I chose to avoid extra
work down the road so I will use a spare server to put VS on, then migrate my
Exchange system to vm's there.
