Set Guest OS Shutdown order / when Shutdown Host

Hi Community,

I=B4m trying to solve a problem with our VS 2k5 R2 production
enviroment, didn=B4t find any built-in solution for that without
scripting.

Firstabout our enviroment:
Host OS: 2k3 R2 Enterprise Edition x86
VM-Application: Virtual Server 2k5 R2 x86
Guest OS: 2k3 R2 Enterprise Edition x86

We have consolidated nearly our whole Domain with two Host-Server,
Exchange, SQL, File&Print, 2x DC=B4s... so it=B4s clear that we have to
shut down our systems in the right order to get a clean shutdown.

1=2E File&Print
2=2E Exchange
3=2E SQL1
..=2E.......
..=2E.DC2
..=2E DC1 (FSMO-Role-Master and primary DNS)

- In the Virtual Server Guest configuration, the default action when
shutting down VS is set to:
Shutdown Guest OS

- The actual VMAdditions are installed on every Guest

On the both Host-Server the Registry-Key:
WaitToKillServiceTimeout is set to 600.000 =3D 10 minutes, Screensaver is
set to 25 Minutes

So what can I do to set a shutdown Order, when a normal shutdown/reboot
at the Host-Server is done?

My question is, when you set the Option "Shutdown Guest OS" in VS 2k5
R2 in which order is the shutdown processed and can I configure/reorder
it.

If not, this is a big issue, then the shutdown option won=B4t make any
sense for a production enviroment.

Is there any registry key, command line option or gui option to set a
shutdown order?

Nope thats not a option, and a wrong answer that=B4s not supported by
MSFT and a bad Idea.

I talked about production guest systems: domain controllers, exchange,
sql... save state is there not supported.

Quote from the Whitepaper "Running a Domain Controller in Virtual
Server 2005"
Operational Restrictions:
"Domain controllers that are running in virtual machines have
restrictions that do not apply to domain controllers that are not
running in virtual machines. The following activities are not supported
because they interfere with proper Active Directory replication:

..=2E.Do not pause or store the saved state of a domain controller in a
virtual machine for extended periods of time and then resume from the
paused or saved state. Doing so can interfere with timely replication."

have you looked into that?
It might be a solution to your problem. I have this running in my own
"production" environment, and after reboot it works like a charm.

It is not supported when you save them for extended periods. if you do a
down up scenario it will work. I f you have to take the host offline longer
scripting is the only scenario that WILL do what you want.
