Unable to install RH 9.0

In need of some assistance identifying why my system is unable to install
RedHat 9.0 as a guest OS.

I've created several other guests thus far (XP Pro, Win98se, SBS2003) and
these are working fine.

I've downloaded RH Linux 9.0 images and burned the CD's.
[shrike-i386-disc1-apt.img]

The Virtual machine will boot from the CD and start the build process. After
detecting the video card, monitor (unknown) and mouse, the system attempts to
start native X server.

Messages to the screen indicates the X server started successfully.

Then immediately the screen indicates the install exited abnormally, sends a
kill signal and unmounts all filesystems.

I've attempted a couple of different configurations (desktop, workstation)
with and without graphics. All without success. They all shutdown at the
same place.

My host system is running XP Pro (SP2) and Virtual Server 2005 R2.

As a side note, I have been able to create a Virtual Machine running
Asterisk/Trixbox 1.2 (pbx system). This machine is using CentOS 4.4, which
I'm told tracks very close to Red Hat.

Any clues or links to other forums that may be of assistance would be most
kind.

I just successfully installed RH9, but my ISOs don't have the -apt in
the file name.

The problem may be how you've configured your X-Windows color depth.
It must be 16 or 32bit, 24 or 15 won't work in VS. The default in the
RH9 install is 24bit, so you should change it to 16bit and that should
resolve your screen problems.

I've eliminated the image downloads & CD's as the source of the problem.

An alternate souce for the .iso's was used and new CD's created (Nero).
These continue to fail when attempting to install as a Guest under a Virtual
Server R2.

The same CD's were then used to install RH 9.0 on an Tyan S1590/AMD-500 MHz
system - this is working.

So it's back to my original hardware platform and Host OS (WinXP Pro) and VS
2005 R2.

My system currently has a single drive, three NTFS partitions. Guest VM's
are being installed on the C: partition which still has over 9.0 GB's
available prior to starting the install.

I've reduced the memory on the .vmc to 128 MB per the suggestion without any
help.

My DVD/CD drive is a Sony DRU-540a with latest firmware.

The latest attempt to install in TEXT mode displayed the following in
Traceback when it failed:

Using a single 20 GB IDE drive in the system (No XP host OS/ No Virtual
Server) I'm able to successfully install RH 9.0 from my set of CD's.

Could use some assistance from any others that have been able to set-up Red
Hat 9.0 as a VS 2005 R2 guest, WinXP Pro as host.

I've got a couple (actually one) idea(s) to try that will focus on the
actual size of the virtual disk vs it dynamic size.

I've also not been able to change the default video resolution to either 16
or 32 bits vs. the default 24 - haven't found the document to step me thru it
yet. Any links?

The default 16GB dynamically expanding works fine on both VPC and VS,
I've installed RH9 more than once, always using the default settings.

It's a step in the installation process. I have a PDF with the steps
for installing RH9 in VPC, but the part where use specify the color
depth is the same regardless of what you're installing on real, VPC,
VS, etc.

What fails:
Cannot install RH 9.0 from CD's burned from downloaded .iso's. Shortly
after booting from CD #1 the following message is painted on the screen:
"Error 2 Reading Header: cpio error: Bad Magic"

Install shutsdown at this point.

What works:
The very same CD's have been used on this same system (without WinXP/Virtual
Server R2) and the install works just fine. It also installs fine on another
PC, also without WinXP/Virtual Server.

What also works is that I can install RH 9.0 on my Host machine as a VS
Guest IF installed using the same .iso's but just doing the CD/.iso capture
as part of VS.

Conclusion:

There is bad ju-ju going on between the VS software and the CD/DVD hardware
(or however it's emulated). If it were 100% my hardware I would expect it to
work fine on everything but Virtual Server.
