Installing "Orcas" (September 2006 CTP)

The installation instructions on the download page are for Virtual PC 2004
SP1, although they mention Virtual Server 2005 R2. Here is the link to the
instructions.

The install uses a differencing disk. When I add a virtual machine and
select the .vmc from Microsoft the virtual machine is created, but when I try
to turn it on nothing happens and the following message appears in the Event
Viewer.

"The parent virtual hard disk "E:\VPC\TimeBombedBase\Base01.vhd" for the
differencing virtual hard disk
"C:\VirtualMachines\Orcas200609Ctp\VSSep2006CTP.vhd" does not exist. "

How do I change the path to the parent virtual hard disk so the virtual
machine can find it? The path is not in the VSSep2006CTP.vmc file that ships
from Microsoft, which is where I would expect to find it.

The easiest way is to try to start the guest in VPC. VPC, unlike VS,
will prompt you for the location of the parent disk and will allow you
to browse for it. Once you've done this, it should open fine in VS.

Just ran into this issue myself. The path to Base01.vhd is actually stored
inside VSSep2006CTP.vhd (in other words, the differencing disk points to its
parent, and the vmc only points to the differencing disk).

On the Virtual Server admin web page, on the left hand side under "Virtual
Disks" click "Inspect" then choose or enter the fully-qualified path to
VSSep2006CTP.vhd and click the Inspect button. It will tell you that the
parent cannot be found and allow you to enter the new fully-qualified path
to Base01.vhd.

Don't forget to install VM Additions. I'm surprised the Additions weren't in
the base, considering that this download was so bloated (e.g. they didn't
even bother to clean out the Temp folders; after cleaning up those and some
other areas, I saved a couple gigs).

I appreciate knowing both solutions. I had already completed Paul's
suggestion by the time I read Ronnie's and it worked perfectly! I prefer to
make the updates on Virtual Server and will try that the next time around.

I ran into the same situation as you. When i used the INSPECT option it
ended up putting an entry in the VMC file marking the base as an additional
hard disk and when i started the VM it them said "The virtual hard disk
"D:\VMachines\Orcas\Base01.vhd"
attached to primary channel (1) of "VSSep2006CTP" could not opened with
read-write access. You need read-write access to the virtual hard disk to
boot a virtual machine. Another virtual machine or the Virtual Disk Manager
might be using this disk right now"

Anyway, i went and removed the base from the list of disks and the error
disappeared. Unfortunately i now get a core dump when the machine starts
(within the VM) .

did yours work without any problems at all ?
