We have several development servers with 160 GB drives partitioned as a
single C drive. Most of them only use 20-30GB of space. Is there any easy
way for me to shrink the size of the virtual hard disk when moving to
virtual server?
We have 5 servers we are trying to migrate, with no more then 150 GB of
data...it would hurt to have to blow 800 GB of server space!

If you use dynamically expanding VHD files instead of fixed-size, most (but
probably not all) P2V tools will only expand them to roughly the size which
was being used. When you create the VHD files, you would define them with a
maximum size of at least 160GB (or whatever the exact size of your current
drives are). If you are looking at the size of their system partition,
remember to add a little for partitioning overhead, else your destination
partition may wind up a few megs too small and your P2V tool will balk.
Since these would be over 128GB, remember you need to attach them using the
virtual SCSI adapter (even if the VHD files reside on physical IDE disks).

Since these are development machines, you might want to ensure that a
runaway process doesn't accidentally write so much data that a VHD grows to
160GB. To do that, you can shrink the partition size inside each VM. The VHD
would still be defined with a max of 160GB but NTFS won't use more than
you've got partitioned. There are numerous tools for shrinking partitions,
but since you said these are "servers" (I assume you literally meant they
are running a server OS like Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000 Server),
you won't be able to use common products like PartitionMagic or freeware
equivalents; they simply won't work on partitions containing a server OS.
Instead, look for products like Paragon Partition Manager (Server or
Enterprise Editions only) or Acronis Disk Director Server.
