Moving a virtual server to different physical host with different hardware

Hi

I can't seem to find an answer on this. I am going to install a virtual
server (i.e. guest) on a PC running MS Virtual Server Enterprise R2.
This will only be temporary, as I am awaiting delivery of a new HP
server, but it's scheduled to arrive 2 weeks or so after I need to have
the (virtual) system up and running. As soon as the server arrives I
will be moving the guest onto it. The PC will be a generic P4 and the
server is an HP ML350 G5, i.e. Xeon with EMT64 support. Will this
present a problem? The host OS will be the same on the PC and the
server, only the underlying hardware will be (completely) different.

Any potential stumbling blocks?

The virtual hardware presented to the virtual guest is the same regardless
of the physical hardware.

Laptop one day, desktop the next, 64bit server later ... the virtual guest
doesn't care.

It is completely portable ... :)

One thing I would take into consideration though, is make sure your virtual
hard drives are sized based on the server storage, not on the PC storage.

Even if you have to run it as a dynamic VHD.

It is easier to move a dynamic VHD to larger storage and convert it to a
fixed VHD, than it is to copy information from a smaller VHD to a larger
VHD.

I am currently trying to do something similar. We have Virtual Server 2005 running on a laptop that we are using as a domain controler for DR purposes; it syncs with our backup domain controler and is then taken off-site at night. It isn't in production at all...but could be in the event of a disaster.

We created the VM using a differencing disk and have run into issues moving the necessary files to get that VM up and running on another box with VS 2005 installed, as it references a parent disk that does not exist. We'd like to backup this VM (and all associated files) to tape as part of a DR backup. I have two questions: 1) Is it possible for us to backup and move this VM to another computer since we are using a differencing disk? 2) If so, how do I do this?
