VMAddditions for Ubuntu / Kubuntu (Debian)

While I know the VMAdditionsForLinux release is only for Virtual Server
and certain Linux distributions, I have been trying for some time to
get the VM Additions for Linux installed in Ubuntu (or Kubuntu, or
Debian derivatives). Previous posts in this area seem to indicate that
all you need are the build-essental & linux-headers-'uname -r'
packages, and then you can run the ./vmadd-install.run script
successfully. However, when I do this, I get an error stating that the
s3_drv.o file cannot be found. The specific message I get during
installation of the X11 package is:
install: cannot create regular file
'/user/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/s3_drv.o': No such file or directory

Could I be missing other packages / SW that is needed to install the VM
additions? Are there other steps that I should be doing?

Any tips, suggestion or previous knowledge on how to get the
VMAdditions installed correctly for an Ubuntu guest would be greatly
appreciated. Please try to be somewhat detailed as I don't have much
experience with Linux (using Virtual PC / Server to start learning how
to use Linux).
