I have two Virtual servers setup and I cannot remote into either one using
the VMRC client...

Setup:
Windows XP Pro SP2
IE 7 RC1
Virtual Server 2005

Machine is in a workgroup...

And I am using a user name that has administrator rights...

I get into the admin screen and start the servers up...

But when I try to remote into it... I get a logon prompt..

VMRC Negotiate authentication
Please type your credentials for remote control access.

I have tried a couple different local user names..

The following error shows up on the VS status page..

The user "HPLAPTOPBR\ben raines" at Internet address 192.168.1.101 failed to
authenticate a new connection to the VMRC server.

This was working a week ago with no problems..

I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling IIS and VS 2005

I have had the same problem and the fix is really simple, but weird:

Basically, you need to turn off simple file sharing on the server that is running VS2005.

With simple file sharing on in windows, users are automatically authenticated as guest...how this relates to Virtual Server 2005 I have no clue, but trust me, it solves the issue.

How does that work with Vista? I am not sure what the equivalent of Simple File Sharing is.

I did find, "Use Sharing Wizard (Recommended)" and turned it off. That did not solve my problem.

OK, for all those who googled this link, I will explain the resolution for windows vista in detail.

The problem is that UAC is blocking authentication from functioning properly, the program "vrmc.exe" does not have access to query local users and groups on the host machine. The program needs to be run as administrator to fix this. It is actually not neccesary to do any of the above things mentioned for XP, as in vista all of those are already set correctly.

Two ways,

1. Right click, run as administrator
2. Alter shotcut \ Compatibility Tab \ Check "Run as Administrator"

The problem I have is not with the VMRC client, but the extra VMRC Negotiate
Authentication step forced when accessing from the web site (Master Status).

Basically when I click on the Tumbnail, It prompts me to enter creds for
"VMRC Negotiate Authentication". I want to get rid of this extra step. The
VMRC client doesnt force me to do this, so why is this coming up?

Also I can put in the local guest admin creds, and I get in fine. So the
problem isnt access rights, as I even set it up to use my local account in
the Virtual Server Security.

Thanks. Disabling Simple Filesharing works like a charm.

Easier way to do it is...
In Explorer -> Tool -> Folder Options -> Scroll to the bottom and disable it :)
