Communications between host and VM on laptop without network connection

I'm running Virtual Server from a laptop. The laptop OS is XP. The laptop
is a domain member but I always log in locally.

I need to be able to move files from the host machine to the virtual
machines. When I'm connected to a network this all works fine. I have
created a virtual network based on the physical ethernet NIC. The virtual
machines get IP addresses from the network DHCP, the machines (real and
virtual) can see and ping each other and share folders. All is good.

I sometimes need to work disconnected and can not get a configuration
working where the virtual machines can see and communicate with the host.

Following instruction in the Admin Guide I installed the Microsoft Loopback
Adapter, configured it to use IP/submak 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0

The instructions didn't say anything about creating a new virtual network
based on the Loopback adapter but I did and tried starting the VM with and
without attaching it.

FWIW, if I start two VMs then they can see each other via the internal
virtual network but they can't see the host machine.

I can give more details if necessary, such as the IP values on the VMs.

The bottom line is I just can't get the host and VM to see each other when
not connected to a real network.
