Can I create a vpn connection from inside a guest OS on VS 2005R2?

My scenario is that my host OS is running XPPro and I have a vpn connection
to work, all is fine. Today, I created a guest OS (also XPPro) for some
testing. I need to be able to connect to my work resources from the guest
OS, so I created a VPN connection.

However, when I try to connect to work from the VPN connection on the guest,
I can't get past the username/password verification. I have tried when my
host OS is connected via VPN and when the host OS has been disconnected from
the vpn. Neither approach works. The vpn is the standard Microsoft software
(I am a little fuzzy here, but I know it is not a third party product, e.g.
cisco).

My simple questions are:
1. Should this work? (Or perhaps it is a security violation)
2. If it should work, is there anything special that I need to do?

Thanks for the replies. I am indeed working with my sysadmin. The error
that I hit is the 721 error.
If the VPN connection "should" work, then we will keep debugging, I just
wanted to know if I was trying something impossible.
When we get it figured out, I will post back.

After doing some experimentation, I believe I have isolated the problem a
little better. If I disconnect the VPN from the host and wait 10 minutes,
then I CAN connect to the VPN from the guest. However, once the guest is
connected, I can no longer connect to the VPN from the host! If I disconnect
from the guest and wait 10 minutes, then the VPN will again work from the
host. (Note: The 10 minutes isn't a magical number, it might be reduced to a
smaller value, I just haven't tried that yet).

So, now the question becomes, can I have two VPN (standard Microsoft PPTP
VPN) connections from my machine - one from the guest, one from the host. My
sysadmin has looked at the VPN server and hasn't found much to configure or
any reason it wouldn't work. I have also tried using different logins from
the host and guest, but I always get an error 721 on the second connection.

Any ideas or pointers?

Several posts on the web indicate that you can't have two VPN connections to
the same VPN server with the same remote IP, and since my home router is
going to give the same remote IP to both my host and my guest, it is not
looking very good.
http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/8816 has a reasonable writeup for those
interested, if I find something even clearer, I will post again.

Sounds like you could use a second NAT router behind your internet
connection. You can also use Windows Internet Connection Sharing on your
host.

I assume that you have the vm configured to use the same network as
your host's physical NIC. With that setup I can make a VPN connection from
the guest or the host (or both at once). So there is nothing special to
configure there.

As Colin said, your Sysadmin may have set some extra restrictions in
remote access policies.

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't get a chance to try it as I was able to
resolve my bigger picture issues without needing two VPN connections, thus
the entire "problem" vanished. But if I were to need a VPN from the host and
the guest at the same time, I would try ICS and see if could get that to work.
