Virtual Server Guest OS Isolation / OEM-license problem

Hello all,

I was wondering to which extent the different virtual machines and the host
operating system are isolated from one another?

To give an example, let's say I want to configure the host operating system
to act as a gateway for the guest operating systems and the other computers
I have attached to my network.

The host computer has 2 NIC's available, one of those is connected to the
WAN (internet), the other one is connected to my LAN. I want the guest O/S
to belong to my LAN, so they need to be forced to pass through the
WAN-interface on my host computer.

It is my intention to install Virtual Server onto my existing Windows XP
Professional (OEM), and host one or two Ubuntu Linux as guest operating
systems.
These guest operating servers would then serve as internal LAN-servers, and
by means of Internet Connection Forwarding, they would also act as limited
(experimental) webserver to the internet.

The most important thing about virtualisation for me is to have the host
computer as internet connection gateway / firewall.

Can this be done?

Therefore another option was to reinstall my computer with a Ubuntu Linux
Server O/S, with VMWare Server installed as well. I would then install
Windows XP Professional into a virtual machine. The problem with this is I
don't know my OEM-license key will work during the installation...

(But here the same question remains, can traffic be forced through the Host
OS before getting to the Guest OS'es?)

Thanks,

Jan
