This probably isn't the best place to get an unbiased opinion, but it's worth
a shot. For those who happen to be familiar with both, which program would
you recommend, particulalarly to be used for disaster recovery purposes?

If we are speaking of Vmware Server 1.0 and Virtual Server 2005 R2 i can
tell that
both are good products. Virtual Server lacks some features (64 bit guests
over all)
but,in my opinion, it is more "entreprise grade" than Vmware Server 1.0
The reasons?
Better CPU assignment to virtual machine and support for clustering.
It is not like Vmware's Vmotion but it is a good thing. And with the planned
VSS support
Virtual Server got another point of advantage over Vmware Server.

Vmware ESX is not comparable. It is another world.

Both have their merits, both are solid programs. I've used both extensively
in the last 6 months. All that being said, as much as I _hate_ the user
interface, I'd probably choose Virtual Server R2 unless there were a
specific feature that I needed that is present in VMWare Server and not in
Virtual Server. Specific features might include x64 guest support, SCSI
support, or USB support.

The API of Virtual Server let's me automate things from the host on the guest.
Does VMWare have similar functions, or it just wins other battles?

I would have assumed it does. But what I am wondering if the API provides
with you with a pipe into the VM.

With VS2005 using IVMGuestOS.Methods I can send command, keystrokes etc to
my vm. This enables me to create new, unique virtual domains on the fly.

The API also provides me with methods to control to Virtual servers itself.

Now I imgine that VMWare provides an API that let's you control the server.
But can I also send keystrokes and commands into my VM through this same API?

One feature that has not been presented here yet is the shared scsi bus in
Virtual Server 2005, which makes it possible to create a virtual cluster.
Quite handy, although it might not fit into disaster recovery.
