I am attempting to execute HTML Applications (HTAs) on a W2K3 Guest OS
running under Virtual Server 2005. The HTAs work under Terminal Services and
on my local Windows XP system. When attempting to execute any HTA through
the Virtual Machine Remote Control/Administration Console Client or using a
web browser with the AcitiveX component for remote administration, the HTAs
do not work. I have tried even the simplest of HTAs without success. Any
help would be appreciated.

Well more testing is in order. I've spent several days on this issue and
none of the HTAs were working. I went back today and ran the EXACT same HTAs
and they were working. The simplest HTA that was not working and is now
working is as follows:

The above code was saved in a file suffixed with .hta, such as 'test.hta'.
When the file was executed (e.g. doubled-clicked), the page would be
rendered, but nothing would happen when you clicked the button. I'm going to
have to go back and attempt to recreate when the problem initially appears.
Originally, I thought the problem might be related to how the code references
the Document Object Model (DOM) when running in a browser through the ActiveX
plug-in or issues with the ActiveX plug-in itself. Now I'm begining to think
it may have to do with how the guest OS is first initialized. I'll retest.

I do not think the problem has anything to do with any of your theories -
Virtual Server, ActiveX, DOM, GuestOS First Initialization are not very
practical reasons.

A far more likely reason is this:
IE Browser on Windows Server 2003 have vastly different security lockdown
than XP. By default, the IE Browser on Windows Server 2003 is specially
locked down and does not run any code, script or otherwise (it doesn't do
much of anything other than display HTML). You can turn off this security
lockdown, though. So, it probably didn't work originally due to lockdown,
and over those days, you unraveled the lockdown for various reasons, so now
it works.

Security Lockdown of IE for the Administrator exists for your protection.
You have to decide whether it suits your needs and take responsibility to
protect yourself if you do disable the built in lockdown.

I found the cause, but I'm not sure of the exact underlying reason. The
problem is somewhat related to the Guest OS initialization. The HTAs that I
am using are meant to do the final configuration of systems created from a
Syspreped image.

The HTAs were in-part meant to fix a problem, but the problem is causing the
HTAs not work. The Sysprepped images are based on system images where there
is a C: and a D: SCSI attached (virtual) drive. There are only two things
which exist on the D: drive when the system comes up. Mcaffee anti-virus and
a backinfo.exe executed using group policy settings when a user logs on.
When the system initializes, the D: drive gets mapped as E: and the virtual
DVD/CD ROM drive gets mapped as D:. This is just the opposite of how we want
the system configured. When the system has what should be the D: drive
mapped as anything, but D:, generally E:, but can be anything for example H:,
the HTAs don't work. I suspect that the Mcaffee anti-virus, is causing the
problem since it can't run unless the secondary drive is mapped properly as
the D: drive. I'm thinking the anti-virus is "hooking" into what can be
executed and/or the filesystem.

If I can fix the incorrect mapping before the system initializes the HTA
issue becomes a non-issue, but then again if I can fix the mapping issue, the
HTA in-part becomes less critical, sort of a catch-22 situation. I'll
probably create a post asking about how to fix the mapping issue, since this
appears to be part of the underlying problem.

Thanks for the responses and the help, it caused me to go back and
re-evaluate the cause and the problem.
